A Wilderness Experience Five Minutes from Downtown Miami
For a wilderness experience try the watery wonderland of Biscayne Bay. Located right in Downtown Miami, the natural beauty of Biscayne Bay seems worlds away. With its emerald islands, clear aquamarine waters and coral reefs bejeweled with marine life of every imaginable species, the Biscayne Bay is truly spectacular. The Bay holds the key to 10,000 years of pirate history, shipwrecks, presidents and pineapple farmers alike. Here are just some reasons to visit the Biscayne National Park.
1. A portion of the park is open 24 hours a day!
You can access the water portion of Biscayne National Park 24 hours a day. Adams Key is only accessible by boat and can be done so only during the day. The visitor's center and headquarters 'Convoy Park' is open every day between 7 in the morning to 5.30 in the evening. Tourists can access the 'Dante Fascell Visitor Center' daily between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Stop over at the gift shop for souvenir items and refreshments. You can also rent canoes and kayaks here.
2. You can take a boat tour
There are two types of boat tours offered by the Biscayne National Park – group boat charters and private charters. Out of these group tours, two of them are snorkeling tours where gear rental is included in the cost of your trip. One tour explores the coral reefs along the finger channels and the barrier islands of the park while the other visits the waters beyond the dense mangrove forests of the park. There are glass-bottomed boat tours that visit the wildlife reserve at Boca Chita Island as well as the lighthouse.
3. You can go on canoeing
The Biscayne National Park offers canoeing opportunities to markers like Black Point and Canoe Point. You can either volunteer or join one of the park's rangers as you explore the sheltered bays, paddle through tunnels of scarlet mangroves and be on the lookout for fish, manatees, water birds, crabs, crocodiles and more. When you canoe across Black Point, you will get a great view of the spectacular Miami skyline. Convoy Point canoe trips are great for beginners. You will glide along the shore of Florida East Coat's longest mangrove island and find yourself skimming over the spiky sawgrass and exploring canals and creeks as you watch for birds, manatees, fish and other creatures.
4. You will see a lot of aquatic life
The Biscayne National Park is home to about 512 species of fish and marine life like flounder, rays batfish, scorpionfish, sergeant majors, eels, and lionfish.
